The Ability to Adapt Communication

The most common cause of ineffective communication is different communication styles, which can lead to more serious difficulties, including confused priorities and increased stress. All leaders must understand their own leadership style in order to better understand how they engage with and are viewed by their team members. 

An authoritative leader, for example, would most likely have a clear goal for success and will align their team appropriately. While this strategy may work for some, it may not work for others who want greater autonomy in their job. Because each team member’s motives vary, learning how to modify communication is critical for influencing people and achieving objectives.


Transparency may go a long way toward bridging the gap in communication. Leaders may develop trust within their team and foster an atmosphere where individuals feel encouraged to express ideas and participate freely. Admitting mistakes might push them to try new things and provide a safe environment for active problem-solving. Every team member should be aware of their contribution to the team’s success. 

The Ability to Listen Actively

Influential leaders know when they should speak and when they should listen. Inquiring about their team’s thoughts, ideas, and comments shows that they care and go a long way toward resolving conflicts. When team members do share, leaders should participate in dialogues by asking questions and taking notes.

Leaders must be present, focused, and avoid interrupting others – maintaining their attention on the person and what they’re saying. Leaders should also avoid distractions while listening to others, such as continuous pings on their phones or checking incoming email.

Stimulating Responses Through Open-Ended Questions

Leaders should embrace asking their team open-ended questions better to understand people’s motivations, views, and ambitions. “Please tell me more,” “Explain what you mean, please,” and “Define that phrase or notion for me, please,” are examples of questions they should ask. 

When interacting with a team, a leader may use such terms to elicit more deliberate, detailed replies while also ensuring that they have clarity on what their team needs to succeed. Asking open-ended questions also shows team members that their leader takes them seriously and cares about what they have to say. 

Correct Use of Body Language

It’s not just what is expressed vocally that constitutes communication but also how someone carries themself. Nonverbal signals, such as body language, account for most of the communication’s impact. Leaders should pay attention to their body language to ensure they’re sending the right message. 

If they’re attempting to motivate someone, speaking with clenched fists and a wrinkled brow isn’t going to work. Instead, they should create direct eye contact to generate attention and rapport while smiling warmly and confidently.


Communication is critical at all levels, but it is especially critical for kids to master at an early age. Great leaders recognize the value of communication and try to improve their abilities to inspire others, listen to others, establish alignment, and implement initiatives.
