It was founded in 1977 by internationally renowned math educator Dr. George Lenchner. It has grown to a global event involving 170,000 students and 5,000 teams from all 50 states and 25 countries. Math competitions have been important in many countries for centuries. The Greeks, Italians, and French held competitions in the XVI century, while Hungary organized Eotvos competitions as far back as 1894. The first Mathematical Olympiad, organized by B.N. Delone and G.M. Frijtengolts, took place in Leningrad, Russia in 1934. It has been held every year since then, except for 1980 due to political unrest in Mongolia. Initially, each country could send up to eight competitors, but now, each country is allowed to send a maximum of four participants to the event.
